The GPS Tracker - What Compasses Only Wish They Were

By David Faulkner

When the Global Positioning Tracker became commercialized in the late 1990s, it revolutionized the way people find their way through the world. The GPS tracker is probably the single most important invention for travelers since the first mariners compass appeared in the thirteenth century. And it has proved equally revolutionary for science, those in the freight industry, vehicular fleet owners, the military, and first responders.

What a GPS tracker does is simply mind-boggling; it allows you, with the help of a network of twenty-one orbiting satellites and a GPS equipped receiver, to accurately locate a target anywhere in the world. The satellites simply transmit the longitude, latitude, and antidote of your target to your GPS device.

GPS Trackers As Mapmakers

Not only will a GPS tracker provide geographical co-ordinates; many GPS trackers are sold with mapping software which will read the co-ordinates and translate them into a picture of the targets movement through a specific location.

GPS trackers are mobile, and some of them are small enough to be portable. GPS trackers can be found in cars; on boats or motorcycles; in PDAs and cell phones; and even in watches. If you are carrying or driving with a GPS tracker, you will always be able to know your location and exactly the route to follow to get to your destination; and if you are using a GPS tracker to monitor the movements of someone else, you will know his or her location at all times. Parents have found the GPS tracker ideal for helping them keep tabs on their kids.

Other Uses Of GPS Trackers

Owners of transportation fleets have found the GPS tracker ideal for preventing unauthorized use of their vehicles. A fleet vehicle equipped with a GPS device is also much less likely to be used for unauthorized stops, or for unnecessary detours. A GPS tracker can not only pinpoint where a vehicle is; it can give an accurate estimate of how long it should take that vehicle to get to its next stop.

GPS trackers help first responder units to locate accident victims whose vehicles are equipped with GPS devices or who have GPS enabled cell phones. They allow ships to be located in the roughest of seas, and back country hikers who have GPS trackers can find their way through uncharted territory with much less wasted effort than ever before.

Oil and gas company geologists use the GPS tracker to accurately survey and map new fields.

The GPS Standard Positioning Service is available to civilians at no cost, and the GPS tracker itself, as a standalone device or bundled with a PDA, cell phone, or watch, is becoming less and less expensive with every passing day.

Most GPS systems have a button or menu selection for setting the current location as a waypoint so it's easier to return to. You can give the spot a descriptive name, and you can choose an icon for it on the waypoint information page, which usually pops up after you mark a location. (On some receivers, to open the waypoint information window, you must manually select the waypoint that you just created.) Even on GPS-enabled BlackBerries and other devices that do not use icons, you can give each point a unique name, such as 'Parking lot'

Global Positioning Systems offer everything from hole overviews to Internet access "Shortgrass Technologies' Internet-based sports information system and financial ticker enables golfers to check college football scores on a Saturday afternoon or the price of stocks any weekday. Global positioning systems can track golf cars no matter where they are on the course, thus discovering bottlenecks and slower play. Golfers can order beverages and food en route to the turn, so golf clubs can offer more than a quick hot dog - a higher priced chicken sandwich, for instance...."

I always thought that GPS would go mainstream in automobiles first, and in a way I suppose it has, but maybe golfers will lead the real charge. I could have used a portable, library-centered GPS system myself to navigate the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library when I was there last fall!
