Many GPS receivers can automatically keep "track" of the path you travel. This can be useful if you need to backtrack, and most tracking receivers can also send the track data to a computer - either for storage, or to plot on a gpsMap.
Built-in maps are nice, but have limited detail. Maps can add $100 or more to the price of a GPS receiver, and are not needed to make a printed gpsMap.

How to save your current location
* Garmin models: Tapping on the vehicle icon on the map screen allows you to save your current location, as well as view your exact coordinates and elevation.
* Magellan Maestro models: tap on the direction icon in the upper left corner to bring up current location information, and the ability to save the current position into the address book.
* TomTom models: Menu -> Add Favorite -> Next Page -> GPS Position

I always thought that GPS would go mainstream in automobiles first, and in a way I suppose it has, but maybe golfers will lead the real charge. I could have used a portable, library-centered GPS system myself to navigate the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library when I was there last fall!
